There has been a lot of discussion on how European integration shall be taken further, and discussions within the Pirate Parties have turned towards that direction as well. Due to the possible need of a new constitution for Germany in order to get the ESM approved this discussion has been, at least to from my biased German perspective, centered around Germany a bit. In svnee’s article on the issue one sentence stood out to me:
It leaves us in a situation where we need to have a new vision for the European Union, a vision that was lacking the last decade, we need great thinkers that advance and advocate for a better integrated E.U. and we need citizens to voice their concerns.
As Benjamin rightly points out, we do not have a lot of time to come up with a solution. So please don’t see this blog post as a way to delay progress. However, I think in order to pitch our visions of what should become of the EU we need to make it more accessible to the ordinary citizen. I think we should try to create media that tells stories set in what we think a good future for the EU would be. Now obviously having a book, or video game set in a dystopia as opposed to a utopia makes for easier story telling, but it is not impossible to do use a positive setting, look no further than Star Trek.
Maybe we could make a kickstarter (or use a similair fundraising campaign) to get price money for a competition where people can submit short stories set in a futuristic, democratic European Union. Maybe we can make an open-source video game set in such a world. I am sure we pirates can come up with a few good ideas on how to develop this vision further. Who is with me on this?
